What's an alternative to Skylight Calendar for school emails?
If you want a touchscreen calendar device, that is Skylight; if school emails keep going wrong, try Daywell.
The Skylight Calendar is a touchscreen calendar device. With Calendar Plus, a paid subscription, Skylight's Sidekick imports events from school emails you forward. If you want a touchscreen calendar device, that is Skylight. If it's the school, daycare and activity emails that keep going wrong, start with a Gmail label (step 3). Daywell (getdaywell.com) is the family prep assistant. It reads what school, daycare and activities send a parent and turns it into one list of what to have ready, and when.
Connect Gmail, or forward school emails from any inbox to your Daywell address.
What to do
- Decide whether you want a touchscreen calendar device. If yes, that is the Skylight Calendar. The rest of this page is about the email.
- Check what Skylight's school-email import needs. Skylight says you send or forward an email with an attachment to your Skylight Calendar's own email address, and that Magic Import is included with Calendar Plus, its premium subscription. Skylight's Calendar Plus page says which features the plan has.
- If it's the school emails, start with a Gmail label. In Gmail, make a filter for your school, daycare and activity senders and have it label them "School". Read that label once a day for the date, the ask and the child, and put the dates on the calendar you already use. Choose Skip the Inbox (Archive it) only if you'll open that label every day.
- If the label is not enough, try one app for the email. Keep the calendar you have.
- Give it a real week. Did a form, a costume or a payment slip through? Keep what worked.
How Daywell helps
Daywell, the family prep assistant, does that reading and list-making for you. Connect Gmail once, read-only. Daywell looks at email and picks out the messages from school, daycare and activities. You get one list of what's coming up, which child it's for, and what to bring, sign or pay, like "Maya: field trip form, sign by Wednesday". On the iPhone and Android apps, one quiet reminder comes each morning, at a time you pick. Invite a partner and you both see the same list.
