My child's school uses Schoology. How do I get the emails and overdue alerts?
In Schoology, Settings, Notifications covers your own courses; switch to your child's profile for grades, attendance and overdue work.
In Schoology, you set email in more than one place. Click your name in the header, then Settings, then Notifications, for emails about the courses and groups you yourself are enrolled in. For your child's current grades, marked attendance and overdue work, click your name in the header and choose your child from the list, then go to Settings, then Notifications, and turn on Email Summary and the Overdue Submissions Email. Schoology's help describes a third route in step 5.
For a Schoology email, connect Gmail or forward it to your Daywell address. For anything else, take a screenshot and share it to Daywell from your phone, or add it in Daywell on the web.
What to do
- Know which notifications are which. Schoology sends email notifications for activity in the courses and groups you yourself are enrolled in, not the courses or groups your child is enrolled in. That's from Schoology's help (published by PowerSchool). Your child's activity is set in a different place, in the next step.
- Turn on the digest for your child. You can get two email digests of your student's activity, daily at a time you set or weekly on a day you choose; to turn them on, choose your student in the header, then Settings, then Notifications, and set Email Summary to On.
- Turn on overdue emails if you want them. From Overdue Submissions Email, set Email Notifications to On. Turning on Overdue Submissions Email gives you one email each time your student fails to submit an item on time, and only one per late item however long it stays unsubmitted.
- Tidy your own notifications. To change them, click your name in the header, choose Settings, go to Notifications, and set each action to On, Off or Custom, then Save Changes; Turn Off All Notifications stops all email for the account. Schoology's help does not state whether Turn Off All Notifications also stops the digest.
- Schoology's help describes a third route. The bell icon is a separate running list that can't be customized, and to get the same notifications as your child you add your email or phone number to your child's notification settings.
- If nothing arrives. To make sure you receive emails, Schoology says to check that your email address is verified, and to contact PowerSchool Support if daily or weekly emails still don't arrive.
- Label what arrives. In Gmail, make a filter for your school, daycare and activity senders and have it label them "School". Add the sender of your first Schoology email to it. Choose Skip the Inbox (Archive it) only if you'll open that label every day.
How Daywell helps
Daywell (getdaywell.com) is the family prep assistant. Connect Gmail once, read-only. Daywell looks at email and picks out the messages from school, daycare and activities. One list of what's coming up, which child it's for, and what to bring, sign or pay. On the iPhone and Android apps, one quiet reminder comes each morning, at a time you pick. Take a screenshot of the message, then share it to Daywell from your phone, or add it in Daywell on the web. Invite a partner and you both see the same list.
Questions parents ask
What is in the Schoology email digest?
Grades, attendance, overdue work and recent activity.
The digest includes the date range, the student's name, each course's current grade, a summary of marked attendance such as late, absent or excused, overdue submissions, and recent activity; if there are no updates you get an email saying so.
I turned notifications off and still get Schoology emails about my child.
Those are set in a different place.
Your own notifications and your child's digest are set in different places. Your own are under your name, then Settings, then Notifications. The digest is turned on from your child's settings: click your name in the header, choose your child from the list, then go to Settings, then Notifications. Schoology's help does not state whether Turn Off All Notifications also stops the digest.
How do I get Schoology updates into Daywell?
Connect Gmail, or forward the email.
For a Schoology email, connect Gmail or forward it to your Daywell address. For anything else, take a screenshot and share it to Daywell from your phone, or add it in Daywell on the web.
I use Outlook or another email, not Gmail. Can I still use Daywell?
Yes, just forward them.
Yes. From any inbox, forward school emails to your own Daywell address, one at a time or automatically. The first time you forward from a new address, Daywell asks you to confirm it's yours; after that, forward again and Daywell reads it.
A form or flyer came home. What do I do?
Share it as a PDF or a picture.
Share a PDF or a picture to Daywell and it reads it, on every device.
Does Daywell read all of my email?
No. It starts with who it's from and the subject.
No. It looks only at who each email is from and its subject, and skips what Gmail files under Promotions, Social and Forums. It opens the ones it judges to be from school, daycare or activities. If it can't tell from the sender and subject, it opens that one too rather than risk missing it. The privacy policy explains what is kept and for how long.
