How do I keep up with my kid's school GroupMe chat without reading every message?
In GroupMe, your Profile has a Calendar that shows every event you have been invited to or RSVP'd to across all your groups, and you can RSVP from it. In GroupMe you can mute one group or all your groups for a length of time you choose. Then add the dates to the calendar you already use, next to the school's dates, and write down what to bring.
Connect a GroupMe group and Daywell picks up the events posted there, and what to bring from the group's messages in the two days before each event.
What to do
- Open your GroupMe Calendar. In GroupMe, your Profile has a Calendar that shows every event you have been invited to or RSVP'd to across all your groups, and you can RSVP from it.
- Mute the chat you can't keep up with. In GroupMe you can mute one group or all your groups for a length of time you choose. A muted GroupMe chat sends no alerts until you unmute it, and your phone's own notification settings always come first. Look at your Calendar every week.
- If an event looks wrong, ask the person who made it. In GroupMe, only the person who created an event can change its time, place or reminders, or cancel it.
- Put the dates in the calendar you already use. For each event or school email with a date, add the date and what to bring the day you see it, like "Ellie: bring a snack Friday".
- Skim before the event. The day before, look back over the last two days of the chat for "bring" and "wear" and write what you find on that date.
- Make a Gmail filter for the emails. In Gmail, make a filter for your school, daycare and activity senders and have it label them "School". Add the school's sender to it. Choose Skip the Inbox (Archive it) only if you'll open that label every day.
How Daywell helps
Daywell, the family prep assistant, does that reading and list-making for you. Connect Gmail once, read-only. Daywell looks at email and picks out the messages from school, daycare and activities. Take a screenshot of the message, then share it to Daywell from your phone, or add it in Daywell on the web. With any email service, forward school emails to your Daywell address and Daywell reads them. On the iPhone and Android apps, one quiet reminder comes each morning, at a time you pick. Invite a partner and you both see the same list.
