How do I keep up with all the Google Classroom emails from my kid's teacher?
Parents and guardians can't access Classroom or student assignments; they can get email summaries if the teacher allows it. Send those summaries to one Gmail label, with the school's other email. When one shows missing or upcoming work, write down the task with the day and which child.
Connect Gmail, or forward school emails from any inbox to your Daywell address.
What to do
- Ask for the invitation. A teacher or school administrator can invite a guardian to receive email summaries about their student's work in class. Email summaries for classes are off until a teacher turns them on. To get summaries, the student must use Classroom with a Google Workspace account. If you haven't gotten the invitation, check your spam folder, then contact the school and ask them to send another.
- Accept the invitation. You have 120 days to accept the invitation: open it, click Accept, then Accept again to confirm.
- Choose how often. Guardians can get emails daily or weekly and can unsubscribe at any time. Pick the one you'll actually read. Summaries can go to any email address; you need a Google Account only to view or change the summary settings.
- File them with the school mail. In Gmail, make a filter for your school, daycare and activity senders and have it label them "School". Add the sender of your first summary to it. Choose Skip the Inbox (Archive it) only if you'll open that label every day.
- Read it for three things and write down the task. A summary can show missing work, upcoming work and recent class activity. It does not include grades. Pull out the date, the ask and which child, like "Maya: reading log due Thursday". For grades, ask your child or the teacher.
How Daywell helps
Daywell, the family prep assistant, does that reading and list-making for you. Connect Gmail once, read-only. Daywell looks at email and picks out the messages from school, daycare and activities. Choose daily or weekly summaries. Daywell reads either. With any email service, forward school emails to your Daywell address and Daywell reads them. You get one list of what's coming up, which child it's for, and what to bring, sign or pay, like "Maya: reading log due Thursday". On the iPhone and Android apps, one quiet reminder comes each morning, at a time you pick.
Questions parents ask
I never got the invitation. What now?
If you haven't gotten the invitation, check your spam folder, then contact the school and ask them to send another.
Do I need a Gmail address or a Google Account?
Summaries can go to any email address; you need a Google Account only to view or change the summary settings.
Can I log in to Classroom to see my child's assignments?
No. Parents and guardians can't access Classroom or student assignments; they can get email summaries if the teacher allows it. The summary is your way in.
Why was there no summary this week?
Google lists the cases with no summary: no activity to report, the teachers turned notifications off, you chose no summaries, or you aren't connected to a student.
Are grades in the email?
No. A summary can show missing work, upcoming work and recent class activity. It does not include grades.
I use Outlook or another email, not Gmail. Can I still use Daywell?
Yes. From any inbox, forward school emails to your own Daywell address, one at a time or automatically.
A paper flyer came home from school. How do I add it?
Take a photo or a screenshot, or save the PDF, then share it to Daywell from your phone, or add it in Daywell on the web. Daywell reads it and lists what it asks for.
How do I get Daywell?
It's in invite-only early access. Join the waitlist on getdaywell.com and we'll send one email when your spot opens. It's free while in early access.
Does Daywell read all of my email?
No. It looks only at who each email is from and its subject, and skips what Gmail files under Promotions, Social and Forums. It opens the ones it judges to be from school, daycare or activities. If it can't tell from the sender and subject, it opens that one too rather than risk missing it. The privacy policy explains what is kept and for how long.
